How to be an influencer

If you tried to mimic another’s style, it will only reflect badly on yourself and encourage a lot of hate. An example is a lady called Coco who became viral from talking with a fake accent and was exposed for it.

Have you ever looked up to your favourite influencers and wish you could have a life like theirs? Well, why not? Being an influencer is easy to start, building up your fame, however, is another story. If you’re looking for ways to become an influencer, you came to the right place!

1. Why should you be an influencer?

It’s easy to start your career as an influencer because you do not have to invest much. Not only that, being an influencer brings you many benefits! You can get sponsorships from your favourite brands (how can anyone resist this?) and also achieve a professional relationship with them. Most importantly, you can explore many different opportunities, career-wise, and gain valuable experience as you work in the long-run.

2. How do you make yourself stand out in the crowd?

i. Start small

In order to beat the competition, you should start small by sharing something you’re passionate about. It can about anything! Arts, fashion, animals, technology, food, nature, you name it! Your followers will slowly build up with the right exposure.

ii. Appropriate content

People's interests

Create content based on your own interests and also your followers’ interests. If you were to create content that only you will be interested in, people would not be bothered to keep themselves updated with your work.

iii. Be yourself

Most importantly, be yourself. If you tried to mimic another’s style, it will only reflect badly on yourself and encourage a lot of hate. An example is a lady called Coco who became viral from talking with a fake accent and was exposed for it. You can have a look at her video and learn something from her.

3. How do you increase your following?

i. Network building

It is important to build your network online and offline. Building your network online is important, but sometimes people neglect the importance of offline networking. Attend as many events (relevant to you, of course) and know more people. These people will be your stepping stones to success.

ii. Self-promotion

Don’t forget to promote yourself. Not to the point that people get annoyed, but instead, you can try to encourage people to take a look at your work using persuasive methods. For example, how does your content benefit them? Is it something amusing? Educational? Determine your content and promote accordingly.

iii. Stay in trend

There are many ways for people to find your work. For example, Facebook and Instagram has hashtags for people to search and explore certain categories (check out popular hashtags on Instagram here). Take advantage of this by including popular (AND relevant) hashtags in your posts for people to find you. As for blogs, you can write on trending topics and use relevant keywords that will help your blog appear when anyone Googles that topic.

4. What platform should you use?

Depending on your content, you should use appropriate platforms. Is it picture-heavy without much context? Try Instagram! What about both word and picture-heavy? Try getting a blog! Enjoy recording your travels? Post them on Youtube! These are a few suggestions but you can try to play around to discover which platform suits you the best.

Becoming an influencer is worth a try for anyone. After all, it takes just a little investment and you’re on your way to having a potentially huge career! And since #yolo, you should try to do something different in your life. Who knows? You might be the future generation’s Shawn Lee or Daphne Charice or Samantha Lee!
